i'm trying to write reviews of many of my recent purchases. look for more to be poster later this week... whoever's doing that idm review archive, feel free to use these. Jimpster: Perennial Pleasures (Freerange/Kudos [KD009]) Jamie O'Dell returns with his 4th twelve inch for his Freerange label. First let me warn that this is not the average idm record. This is an amazing jazz record with a few breaks thrown on top for good measure. It is performed by (gasp!!) a LIVE band!! Also a second warning: ignore the 33rpm on the label. For best results turn that baby up to 45!! "La Di Da" (A1) and "Tony Bell" (B1) are two nice little ditties that put me in the same mood as i was in when i heard Tom J.'s "Bubble And Squeak". Before closing it up with "Static Dynamic", which reminds me of something on mum's smooth jazz station, execpt with breaks and moogs and the works. This is not Jazz influenced drum n' bass, but rather Drum N' Bass influenced Jazz. Pick it up if you dig that sort of thing. Freeform: Palava Lamp (Worm Interface [wi10]) Carnival music, anyone? Simon Pyke, resident idmer, returns for a new 12" on Worm Interface with a bang. Leaving his former (dare i say?) autechre-sounding, self, he returns for a wild and crazy ride. Two long tracks, with melodies that the human mind can not even begin to comprehend. This is unlike anything i've ever heard, and probobly ever will hear. Like I said before, this is circus jazz at its darkest edge. Is this even IDM? God only knows. My best description would be to smush the RDJ album, Mr. Bungle's 1995 self titled release (minus the metal guitars, of course), global goon, and primus' more twangy side. Confused? You should be. That's what freeform was going for. Various: Plug Research and Development (Plug Research PRCD10) Socking it to us straight from the west coast ("leftfield from the left side"-Plug Research Motto), plug reasearch delivers a blistering disc full of electronic experiments that would put Skam to shame. Unlike the two earlier mini compilations on PR, this disc is virtually nameless. No ishi, No Paradinas. But what this disc lacks in big name artists, it makes up for in plain old great music. Opening it up with the simple beep-becomes-beautiful melody on Smyglyssna's "Mjukfryst Korall" (say that three times fast, or better yet, say that at all), the disc takes us through a rip roaring ride of distorted beats, noisey backgrounds, and downright odd melodies. Various: 0161 (Skam/Public/ v/vm [cat no. 0161]) Following up V/Vm's brilliant comp, Priviliged Frames for Reference, the Manchester krews team up to bring us some more head pounding tracks. Aside from the usual suspects (jega, gescom, datathief, bola, etc.) this disc brings in a whole new cast of charectors, including Audiomontage from Freerange, and none other than The Fall. Just with that lineup, you should have this cd in your hands right now. The comp runs from both sides of the spectrum. Its noise now and then its ambient. It's cheesy guitar rawk now, and then its drum n' bass, then it's industrial. Next thing you know its all of the above, all at once. If this isn't enough to make you run out and buy this, it's also for a good cause. All profits from this album will be donated to aid for the 1996 IRA bombings in Manchester. So, no excuses. Get this now. You'll be helping a good cause and causing good music. mult. http://rampage.ml.org/users/~multsanta
