A review of "Dok" in The Wire mentioned "Maxplay" but thats only a >player for OpCode's Max. Is it Max? Someone must know. Thanks. Max has some commands that refererence the internal CD drive in your computer. If your drive has quick enough seek/access time you can do some spectacular stuff, like finding and storing peaks and lows and looping things in real time. It's a great environment. I'm sure it would be VERY easy to ape mr. Popp with Max (if that's your thing). On a similar note; did any of you catch Achim Wollsceid in your town? He played here in Boston at the Gallery Insekt downtown a few days ago. A good portion of his music were pieces performed on these voltage-pulse switches screwed into the sockets of 16 overhead lamps strewn out along the ceiling of the gallery scientifically to produce the widest spread. The switches were controlled by some gold-brick like interface controlled by a PC laptop. He created his own software and had about 10 different compostions for this setup. When it got going, it was pure sahko/bouncing ball type stuff, and the effect of the music depended on your location in the gallery. Brilliant. There were also some sound-catching plaques set up, which stored crowd noise and responded to audio above a certain frequency. When the "show" officially started, Achim read a text, while the software spit out reandom excerpts of the collected ambient room sounds (including a reocurring loud bit when someone knocked his amplifier over twenty minutes earlier). There was also some typical noise-performance, which was a little droll. But the clackers, man, really fucking perplexing. Well worth checking out. There's a CD of this stuff (I believe) called 'Moves' on his label, Selektion (also home to RLW and, originally, Bernhard Gunter). I'm not sure just how well a stereo representation would hold up (it's really a 360 degree experience), but it's worth a shot. -Hrvatski ___________________________________ Reckankreuzungs Klankewerkzeuge & Company PO Box 382864 Cambridge, MA 02238 - 2864 is online @ http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket
