Yes, the warp version has it too. No idea why. I decided to
respond to this because I'm going to see Ae in NYC next sat. night. Try as I
might, I can't get into this new album of thiers. And to tell the truth, I
only like a few tunes on "Chiastic Slide" Though the good ones are Really
Good.
My first Ae experience was with "Amber", and I will admit that
when I first heard it, I did'nt like it. I think that it was because it was
so completely different from anything I'd ever heard before, I couldn't
associate with it (despite the fact that I'd always been a big fan of ambient
house, early Orb, Orbital, Banco de Gaia, and classic new age electronica.)
But Amber was different. It was totally unique. Needless to say that with a
few subsequent listens and an open mind, I grew to love it. In time I went on
to buy all of thier other CD's. And learning to understand thier music opened
me up to other possibilities. I went on to buy stuff from Sun Electric, LFO,
Plaid, Carl Craig etc....
Even the new Plaid CD-- on first listen it's not all that
friendly. Hear it a few times, and you can't stop playing it! I try to play
this stuff for my friends when they come over to my apartment, and they look
at me like I'm insane.
I tell people that understanding IDM (especially Autechre) is
like looking at one of those "Hidden Picture" paintings. Once the hidden
picture is revealed, you'll never look at that painting in a different way
again. Once you adjust to the way IDM sounds, it becomes clear to you --- and
someone else who has never heard it before hears something entirely different!
Case in point: I was playing one of my favorite songs of the decade,
"Flutter" off the Anti EP. My landlord (and good friend) comes in and thinks
the disk is skipping. And unfortunately, I regret to say that for a lot of
people, that song will never become clear to them, no matter how many times
they hear it.
Well, the "Picture" buried in Lp5 has not yet revealed itself
to me, after several listens with a very open and informed mind. Am I missing
something? Do any of you agree with me? As much as I may respect Sean & Rob
for trying to stay fresh, I'm not going to pretend to like it. I think
they've lost something. Perhaps thier show on Saturday will change my
opinion; I've never seen them live. Sure hope they play some of thier older
stuff.
Thanks for reading this long post, send your opinions,
