(idm) a few things to clarify

From Peter Becker

I've been crusing the digests for a week now and I could'nt hold back on a
few things:

a.

Re: the "kids these days" rant with the Kraftwerk comment ( sorry, I can't
remember the context)
for the person whose post ended with something like " thus Tour de France"
should be restated "thus
ComputerWorld" as "Computerworld was released *years* before Tour de
France. If electro has roots (and
it certainly does) the roots dig the deepest to Computerworld, though Tour
de France is indeed another pinnacle of
electro inspiration.

b.

For *wells*, I believe ?....the instrument used on Soliloquy for Lilith
was made from scratch by Stapleton and
then destroyed after the recording.
This is what I have been told by *extremely* reliable sources....what
*type* of instrument I don't know.

c.

for Paul Moore <xxx@xxxxxxx.xxx> who posted the Xecutioners dates for
their tour , thanks!
BTW, *who* did you get the tour info from...? It was accurate, just curious...
Anyways, the tour is going very well, as We's tour of Europe is.
I will post an updated tour itinerary with *all* of the dates to IDM by
tomorrow, I hope.
It's a 36 date tour of the US and Canada. So far, it's the bomb!

in:re the theremin issue with the Beach Boys. mentioned by Ben Coffer
<xxx@xxxxxxxxxx.xxxxx.xx.xx> :

"Uh? Hello? Even *I* know that there's a Theremin in Good Vibrations...
it's very distinct indeed....and it goes oooooowoooowooooo....."

I have researched this and remember from memory that it was indeed a
theremin used in the recording.
The clips that have been shown in no less ( and maybe more ?) than 2 films
on the band show I believe
as mentioned, by Brian & Sharon Beuchaw <xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx> , that Mike
*was* indeed playing a
Ribbon controller, which I believe they toured with. Whether or not it got
the same sound was another issue.
I saw them in 74 and 75 and don't remember anyone waving their hands in the
air but I *do* remember
someone (Mike?) playing a kooky organ that made kooky noises.

 <xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx> said:

"But a Theremin looks *nothing* like what Mike Love played in the video to
the song. It looked like a Ribbon Controller to me - and a Ribbon
Controller doesn't even come close to being similar to a Theremin. But
then in the booklet in the _Good Vibrations_ boxset, Brian says "Good
Vibrations had a lot of riff changes...bring the echo chamber in, do this,
put the Theremin there, "

I would postulate in this case that if you listen closely to the video/film
clip, that, as often done in those days,
the music was dubbed onto the film track right from the LP master. Just
because Brian used a theremin did'nt *necessarily* mean that they
shot movies with it or even toured with it. One thing I have seen with the
theremin, both live and on film is that
the tones change and significantly are different every time you play it.
It is a *very* temperamental instrument.
Maybe they (BBs) just could'nt get it to sound the same for their live gigs
so they went with the Ribbon Controller.

enough on the Beach Boys....except:

e.

It seems just *silly* that so much emotion and flame baiting goes on around
this list
in particular regarding personal taste.

Basically, I have my personal taste and respect the personal taste of
others. It has developed to be a
way of life/personal philosophy. I can certainly *disagree* with someone's
taste and would certainly
offer to be the chairman of the comittee to destroy the music of Kenny G.
However, I certainly respect people's love of Kenny G. If that's what they
rock, that's what they rock.
Is it any different than your Autechre or Hootie and The Blowfish?
A rose is a rose is a rose.

The other night I was shopping for dinner and saw a woman who was *jamming
* to a Billy Joel
song on the radio overplayed in the market. It was great to watch her have
so much fun, regardless
if I thought the music is pedestrian. I was wondering if her reaction
would be the same to Vic Acid
or Basic Channel, or Sahko, or Coil......probably not, oh well. But I had
no interest in telling her how
unworthy her gyrations were since the root was Billy Joel. Who the fuck
cares?

Why are people so insecure with their personal taste that they have to be
so malignant and caustic with it?

Perhaps they see that their taste also as having shallow points that are
embarassing?
Perhaps their taste has only recently become esoteric and hip and need to
tell the world that they've
finally become cool?
Perhaps they see an agressive aethetic opinion as being the only one to
establish their identity on the IDM list?
Perhaps the only way that people can get a message across that they are "in
the know"?
I truly don't know.

The best way to figure out another depth of this query is to research the
musical tastes of your musical heroes.
I have found, though I'm young, that most of the people who make music that
I *realy* respect have a less than
"perfect" musical library.

Remember that mean and caustic guy who lashed out at wells for listening to
Nurse With Wound
"Soliloquy for Lilith" and then branded him a "Jewish faggot" merely
because he was listening to
(paraphrase here ) ignorant stupid music? It was interesting to see how
many people here on the list came to his
wells that is, defense....myself included.

Not to poke fun, wells, as I value your posts and your thoughts ( please
remember that before we get into a flame off )
but it seems that your anti Beach Boys lash is just about the same as the
one you received just a week before less the
hideous and violent wording. Another difference is that you were not
baiting anyone in particular , as that fellow was.
Of course, your right to exclaim that the Beach Boys are entirely unworthy
shit is the same right that someone has
posting his genius. But why the absolutism?

Its just that absolutism is so facistic, and transparent.

Surely, folks....if the interviews in the up and coming magazines were to
come out with Autechre's, Richard James,
Mu-Ziqs, SKAM's, VVM's, MAS, etc etc etc *love* for the Beach Boys, you
could be sure that everyones tune would change, straight up.
Or if the tunes would'nt change, at least the opinions would get *quieter*.

Support uncool music. let those who disagree disagree. I would'nt sell my
Steely Dan records for the world or The Beach Boys
or whatever other music comes about as "uncool" by anyone, *anyone* .

And
I remember a day when Can, Parliament Funkadelic, lounge music, and even
electro were either obscure and without mainstream acceptance
or considered quite "uncool".....and now........

respect folks, I love y'all. But geez you take your musical opinions *so*
seriously....maybe you can actually* learn* something
by holding your opinions in check for a while. I can think of *countless*
albums, artists, and musical works that I only
liked after scrutinizing them upon recommendation. In most cases, they
were things that I did *not* like at first.

many people are missing out on a *lot* of great music.

Peter

np: Too Short, Life Is ( West Coast Hip Hop......how very uncool. )
nxt: the entire works of Rush
after that: something realy hip that all the IDM'ers will just be green
with envy that I own, like that Beach Boys Autechre remix . doh!
