The trend strongly arose out of the DSP advent, at large, though the quest after aseptic and free from contamination soundscapes surely is an old story… By the way, it always surprises me, since it seems a pretty empty concept from a creative viewpoint or... just sterile and inconsistent. Do not noises and clips and thumps and bums and hums take part anymore in music and creation, as well as in life and natural processes?

sure, but this about usefulness. I, kind of, agree for some things that
is fine. and and a nice artifact...sometimes. When it happen at every
switch, that gets old fast--depends on material. That "click" may
become an irritating side effect in many cases IF used with audio.

Has nothing to do with "sound quality” That should remain the same.
