Oval "Szenariodisk" (Thrill Jockey)
Markus Popp, aka Oval, describes this as =93the first Oval R & B record=94. =20
Comprised of six tracks from his limited Aero Deko and Szenario 12 inch=20
releases, (plus five bonus tracks) Szenariodisk is the final installement in=20
this three part series. As to be expected of Popp=92s work, layers of rich=20
digital fuzz and tone form the foundation while CD-skipping styed sounds,=20
pops and burps lay down the rhythm.
But despite the predictability of Oval=92s sound, what draws me to this reco=
rd=20
for repeated listens is the quaintness of the music. In a way, =93to the=20
point=94, each song rides between the one to four minute mark, never excedin=
g=20
the point of bordom. On top of that, I find each track to be in one way or=20
another, interesting. Were label mate Nobukazu Takemura=92s Scope is simila=
r=20
in sound and concept, but at times a bit drawn out, Szenariodisk keeps the=20
flow going in an upbeat manner=85 well, =93upbeat=94 the only way Oval could=20
possibly be. I would say Popp description of this as his first =93R & B=20
record=94 as not being far off, but I think a better desciption would be it=20
being more of a =93pop record=94 then anything else (pardon the irony). 8/1=
0 =20
