You absolutely, positively must go see Aavikko if you can at their upcoming dates in Chicago, Boston, and New York City. They are from Finland, on their first US tour. They played out west with Monopause and sold out in San Francisco. They didn't sell out here, but the crowd there was well and truly up for it. They are a three piece band -- two gentlemen on keyboards and a drummer -- he's a gentleman too. They use consumer grade keyboards -- the obscolescent toy keyboards in everyone's closet, to make a rocking amalgam of 60s film music, Surf, Eastern European Disco, and even a bit of Klezmer thrown in for good measure. It's been a long time since I've seen a live band really smoke live; as much as I like music made by mouse, there's a visceral thrill to people banging it out live. The rock solid drumming -- a mix of casio beats, mattel synsonics and electronic drums makes it even more groovy. To use one of those soundclash metaphors, it was like booker t jamming with kraftwerk, abba, and ennio morricone. In a way it's very synthetic music, but with a great sense of humor and very musical verve. Highly recommended. In Chicago, tomorrow night (7/28) they're playing at the Abbey Pub 3420 W Grace (at Elston) 7-30 Cambridge, MA TT The Bear's 8-1 New York, NY Knitting Factory w/VHS or Beta This is one show that Iowa City got and Detroit did not.
