RE: (idm) IDM vs Rock bands

hey all...

--this subject intrigued me...
--I am a guitarist from the rock tradition...hendrix, zeppelin, pink floyd,
jane's addiction, and the cure, mbv, etc.
--for almost a year now, i have been working with a dj on an ambient/idm
thing...
--and i still work on my psychedelic rock stuff....
--we both grew up on 60's, 70's rock, but over the last 7-8 years, we've
been way into elec. stuff...more as observers...
--then, last nov/dec. we got going with our project...we found that the
stuff was closest to how we wanted to do it was ambient/idm as opposed to
hardcore, house, techno, etc.
--we discovered Gas, Pole, Autechre, Plaid, etc etc...and we've gotten much
more into the complexities....Fax label stuff...aphex, dj krush, etc...
--basically, I'm trying to say that there should be no limits to what an
artist wants to experiment with or do....i love it all...with exceptions of
course, but the deal is that i have one foot in the rock tradition and one
foot in the experimental electronica...
--i am loyal to both...to me both are all about freedom of expression...and
that is the main point of all art...isn't it...??
--the true pioneers of rock were major rule-breakers and such...jimi hendrix
had Roger Mayer of the British Admiralty(navy to us US people) building
custom effects for him....and others followed...isn't this like dj's getting
all sorts of cool fx from Roland made specifically with the electronic
artist in mind...like Dr. Groove....or Dr. Sample...you know what i mean??
--and then there was jimmy page using the violin bow on the guitar and using
organs, synths, moogs, mellotrons, and all sorts of special effects....
--to me these were the most brave, envelope-pushing of rock musicians...the
idealism of these people to me is the same as the idealism of electronica
artists...all are people concerned with art and not with the barriers that
exist to confine these things to categories...
--i read something about one of the chem. bros.--he plays good guitar...but
thinks it lame to play one on stage....
--this dissapointed me...if he's a so-called experimental artist breaking
the boundaries of how music should be, then shouldn't he not give a shit as
to how he's perceived on stage....
--I saw Goldie when he opened for the Jane's relapse tour...
--he had full on guitarists/bassists there...to me that was
exciting...seeing how the two worlds meshed...
--I am going to be doing gigs with my dj and doing ambient/idm stuff and
i'll play the fucking guitar wherever i want....i don't put limits on myself
other than what I WANT to do...
--maybe i guess that's what tom from chem bros. was talking about...if he
personally doesn't want to go around with a guitar, that's one thing...if he
doesn't want to do it because it would look lame to the audience, then
that's somewhat of a limited point of view...if i meet him, i'll ask him and
let all know....
--well, i'm sure most nodded off after my first few lines....but for those
of you who read up to this point, i would really love to hear some thoughts
on this...thanks...the (forever free) liquid professor...
