Here's a review from the latest issue of e.x.p. (issue 4) Download III (Subconcious Communications/Nettwerk) cEVIN Key's third installment of Download (aptly titled III) raises the listener from the holistic depths of his last album, The Eyes of Stanley Pain, only to drag the victim through territory not even the most fammished of canines has seen. Haunting sketch scapes, static storms, and tech-noir are still staple products here, but now dub basslines set things in motion. The end product can be vaguely described as being the Orb on a really bad trip. Considerably mellower than the previous releases, while steering clear of being clumped as techno, post-industrial or ambient, III leaves the tired dog of days past behind and takes a serious step forward. -t.S.o.G. it sounds nothing like autechre. it sounds vaguely (and I stress the word vaguely) like Last Rights era Skinny Puppy without the vocals or vocal samples. Heavy in the percussive elements (not to be mistaken with breakbeat or drum'n'bass), dark/broken sounds, & what sounds like layer upon layer of electronics. Personally, I like Download and I think Eyes of Stanely Pain is definetly worth checking out. It's probably the most overwhelming "bullet to the head" cEvin Key release to date. The first album "furnace" is ok. But it's a bit too muddy for me. anyways, hope this helps luke t.S.o.G.
