hi pedro last night, wednesday, 7 april, i saw steve reich perform in chicago. coldcut did not appear on the program, so, unfortunately i cannot tell you anything about what their performance will be like. steve reich's performance was quite enjoyable. for those of you unfamiliar with his work, steve reich is a modern minimalist composer. in the early to mid sixties, mr. reich began to use tape recorders to record, loop, and minipulate sound much in the way current electronic musicians do. his program consisted of three pieces. the first piece was the first two parts of a composition called 'drumming'. this piece was influenced by reich's time studying percussion at the institute for african studies at the university of ghana in 1970. the piece is for four pairs of tuned bongos, three sets of marimbas, and voice and played by up to nine musicians at a time. this piece is a study of looped repeated patterns with the voices imitating the instruments slightly out of phase. the second part of this selection was mesmerizing and featured up to nine musicians repeating patterns and melodies on the three sets of marimbas. the second selection was 'different trains'. this piece featured a string quartet live and source material played by the kronos quartet (up to four string quatets making up the musical content at one time). the piece also features recorded spoken voice samples as part of the music. the last piece, entitled 'hindenburg', was a performance piece with music by reich and video by his wife, beryl korot. fifteen musicians and a video projection screen were used for this particular piece. the video images were very interesting and quite captivating. i encourage any and all to attend this event. i'm not sure if the nyc event will include the same program by steve reich; however, anyone interested in modern music should find this program highly rewarding. johnny xxxxxxxx@xxxx.xxx wrote: > Does anybody have any info on this event?
