I thought rock was invented by AFX. 'Come to Daddy'...

IMO, OK Computer is the most overrated album of the year. The best non-idm
releases were
Kiss My Jazz 'The Lost Soul's Convention' (experimental jazz)
Think of One 'Juggernaut' (experimental gypsy(?)-kinda stuff)
Portishead 'Portishead' (no comment needed)

The most promising debut
Cinérex 'I Spy-EP' (Portishead meets Chemical Brothers meets James Bond
Soundtrack)

I am impatiently waiting for
Flowers for Breakfast (Sonic Youth but way better)
Massive Attack
Zita Swoon (90's rock meets 30's film soundtrack)

Other memorable things in 97
Bjork has become musically adult after all ('Homogenic')
Coldcut is back ('Let Us Play')
