I've got 'Celestial Soul', 'Objet D'Art' and i second tom's kudos for this one. you've got to be in the right smoke-filled room frame of mind for it, but KD takes the tech-jazz fusion trip several orders of magnitude past the seminal roots of jupiter jazz era UR and even the latest ferox style musical messages from the desert. genres don't mean much anymore (thank god), but suffice to say that this record by this guy (who we all know wishes he was from inside the 10 mile road perimeter) on this label (known more for ill trip hop) is probably gonna get "filed under jazz" by most non-clued shop clerks who happen to give it a spin. save for one fairly traditional op-art track (brown, blue, brown on blue) this record as a whole doesn't "sound" very electronic. the influences here are many, but it all comes together and WORKS, in a very freeform adlib solo open tuned soul sort of way. exploratory technical musical aspects like modal chord progressions, eastern flavored woodwinds and bizarre time sigs are tied down with more familiar elements as lovely acoustic guitar (ian o' brien: that boy can play!), live trap set drumming and even a great jazz vocal track (away from all of this). the closer (mind filter) is a verve suckah punch openmike jamsession sundae with the k-degiorgio trio, featuring carl craig on the arp and ian o brien jabbin isaac hayes shaft wah-wah guitar stabs in yer craw. different, but definitely tastee........... it's unlikely that many of you will be spinnin' doubles of this alongside purpose maker 5 (well, on 2nd thought...) but i think planetary folklore should be regarded as a good (maybe even important?) record. get yourself a bottle of campari, turn the lights down and check it out. then start diggin' out those old brubeck and coltrane plattahs........ peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeece, np: funkstörung: vol.gstört (non-repetitive version) Jeff Davis <pHlow> ____--~~~~~~vvvv~~~~ oooo812.831.7846 xxxxxxx@xxxx.xxx____---- ( ( ( vvvv ~~~~~~ooooooooooooo ___----( ( \ \ \ \ \ vvv ooooooooooooooooooo ____---- ( \ \ \ \ \ \ \ http://www.xnet.com/~jjdavis/
