(idm) Bad Year For Music?

Yes, I know now's probably not the time to get cynical, with Christmas
approaching and all, but does anyone agree that this year has been,
well, a bit dull on the old music front. I have only bought about five
albums that are really pretty damn good this year, and those are hardly
anything radically out of the ordinary. Look:

1. Sluts and Strings and 909 - Carrera
2. Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
3. Stereolab - Dots and Loops
4. Various - Strata-2-East Compilation
5. Bjork - Homogenic

Great records, sure, but there's just something not quite as exciting
about them as there should be, for the pick of a year. Now admittedly I
haven't been keeping up maybe as well as I should, but name me one
person who has done something even remotely radical new or interesting
this year? I can't really think of any (okay so it's a cheap ploy to get
you people to tell me what I *should* have been listening to!)...

I know the Uriel LP is probably wicked, but who the hell stocks it (is
it CD only or something?) I haven't seen it anywhere, and I only picked
up the Funk Attack Phenomenon 12" out of blind luck...

Rephlex have really sucked this year. Not a single amazing album in 97,
unless I am being extremely forgetful. We can forgive them for piss-take
releases and retro tendancies when we've been given such great full
lengths from Mu-Ziq and Squarepusher in the past, but my patience is
beginning to wear thin. Not longer can I afford to spend 5 quid of my
dole money on a Rephlex 12" in the hope that it will be good. What
happened to quality? 1997 - the year of patchy releases or what?

There's been lots of good singles (Cylobs Latest Effort, Buckfunk 3000's
'In Is In', Gerd, DJ Krust's Genetic Manipulation, DJ Suv's 'Freebeat',
the list goes on and on) but where are the quality full lengths? It's a
really bad sign when you try and think of good releases and only come up
with stuff from last year ie Jimi Tenor LP, RDJ LP, etc etc etc.

Moan, moan, moan...

Maybe it's just me, eh? Let's hope so...

Gb.

PS The links below now *actually work* (I hope). Thanks Chip! Pity
they've been like that for months, but it's my own dumb fault for not
noticing the error sooner and/or actually testing them. Ooops! Apologies
for anyone who tried to get there and it didn't work...
