my pal returned from japan with a copy of the stereolab miss modular single for me. parts of it are really amazing. for those interested i'll do my best at a quick review upon first listen: 1 miss modular (single version) 4:14 2. miss modular (automator mix) 4:10 3. refractions in the plastic pulse (feebate mix) remix by autechre 7:45 4. contronatura (prelude to the autumn of a faun mix) remix by kid loco 5:20 track 1, straight off the album. great! track 2, the automator remix. starts out with looped pianos, one teaspoon of scratching, canned beats, and choral sounds in the background. voices are laid on top in conventional methods. nothing revolutionary with this track. in fact, the original is so good that for me it's quite a dissapointment, more of a sham really. listen to track 1 instead. track 3, the start of this track is sick. the autechre remix has crazy beats, exciting and inventive uses of voices, and is totally different than what you're use to from rob & sean. the way the voices are manipulated is so cool, and when the beats roll in, oh man. the last thing i heard which manipulated voices in such cool ways was the most recent afx single. around the 3 minute mark it goes off into another world of strange, majestically layered sounds only to come back and go off again. i wish i knew of albums full of music like this track. mere words cannot describe this one. in this track i particularly enjoyed the intelligent use of voices and guitars in ways very different than you typically hear. track 4 is laid back. funky organ keys, thereminesque voices in the background, a bit more off the beaten path. beats sound kinda funky at first, but they, just like most everything else in this remix, don't change too much. it's my opinion the track could have been shorter. love always, warrenshadey ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
