Whilst late-night channel-surfing, last night, I happened upon one of the four public access channels we get to enjoy, here in Manhattan. The music caught my ear -- it was warm, low and drone-y, static upon first listen, but constantly evolving upon closer inspection, and the tuning sounded a bit, well . . . different -- "kind of like a microtonal Jliat," was my first thought. The visuals were very minimal (mostly black screen with three narrow vertical bands equally spaced, giving what appeared to be a glimpse into the shifting light patterns that were taking place behind the black screen), but the music was nicely mesmerizing, so I turned the volume up and went about getting ready to turn in for the eve. The piece ended, and I looked over to the set just in time to see the words "Music by David Beardsley." It's always nice to see a familiar name . . . Well done, David. This was followed by another (equally minimal, visually-speaking) video piece, music by Beardsley and one other person. This piece was much more "active," loaded with beating patterns, and the sounds had much more "attack" to them (personally, I felt that this detracted from the sounds). Anyhow, the program came on unannounced, and wasn't listed inthe program guide, so I have no idea what it "was." DB, you should announce yr TV appearances in the future ;-)
