I'm not suggesting that patch cords with zeners across them would be ideal. But, between the units listed by the original poster, I can't see a problem. I'm sure any analog gear should be able to stand a short on any output - and a zener is friendlier than that. I can't think of an alternative, other than hacking gear to limit outputs to the lowest level.
