Subject: (idm) Roni Size Reprazent...New Forms... a piece of shite!
Just picked up this CD (after having it recommended by many people) and
I am thoroughly un-impressed!
This 2CD album sounds like a bunch of throwaway tracks... basically it
sucks! The drum programming is
passable in spots (though not many...Roni doesn't like to freak the
beats too much, does he?) but the
MUSIC (if you want to call it that) is just plain hideous...and those
vocals....Jesus, if this is best
Drum n Bass CD of the year then I must be missing something... "New
Forms" is without a doubt
THE WORST PIECE OF SHIT CD I HAVE HEARD.... EVER!
In light of this.... I am hereby offering a trade of this 2CD coaster
set for ...anything worth listening to.
Peace,
James Bernard

Yes, yes, yes. I totally agree on this one, heard all the reccommendations,
bought it a while ago. Luckily from Tower who have a pretty liberal returns
policy. Took it back with receipt and got "Refried Food", "Chomp Samba" ep,
and the Photek w/ japanese sword name (no I can't be bothered to look it
up) in return. This was a big, long, expensive piece o' shite I'll tell
you. When they asked me what was wrong w/ it I just told them it was awful,
terrible, rubbish .... Its definately not IDM more like FMDM (fashion mag
dance music - am I allowed to start new genres?), much too straightforward.
Won a mercury prize tho' so i guess i must have my head up my arse

I've just borrowed something wonderful : African Head Charge's "In
Pursuit of Shashamane Land" (prod. by Adrian Sherwood) 1993, on On-U
Sound. Amaaaaaaazing doesn't come close to summing it up. There's
recently been talk here of Mark Stewart, Tack>>Head etc : this is
from the same stable and even though I've heard early material by
them (Off the Beaten Track), this is really brilliant and makes the
current D'nB almost pale by comparison. (Okay, so there are about 4
lame tracks on the 60 min. line-up - soft reggae-y vocal ones, skip
'em.)

If y'like that one - check out "Songs of Praise", (On-U Sound) probably
'91, I wouldn't compare it to d'n'b but its a killer anyhow. Sacred (i
think) African chanting and glorious percussion, with swathes of Skip
McDonalds acid guitar and Sherwood's echo'n'fuzz. Dreamy and not a duff
track.
