I think if IDM were a radio format, it'd be called album-oriented techno (if they hadn't already settled on electronica). I think that much of the same dynamic is at work separating IDM from the more traditional forms of house and techno that separated e.g. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd from e.g. Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry.
