Thanks for the pointer, at the very least it's another schematic that
makes use of the 3320. To my ears, however, the lowpass was about what
I expected. It sounds alright when not pushed but as the resonance
goes up and the cutoff comes down it has a quality that I don't care
for. At any rate, it does seem that perhaps it's best used for
highpass/bandpass applications.

The other samples were interesting, but, it's difficult to tell if you
are hearing the 3320 or if the other patch choices are the dominant
factor. In other words, without a side by side comparison I can't tell
if the 3320 is better in the same application as some other filter.

Can you express what "neutral sounding" and "clean" mean in terms of
shaping a typical VCO waveform?

I don't need one. I have four or five 3320s in my junkbox and so I'm
looking for the best circuits to build around them. In particular, if
there are subtle design choices in synths that use the 3320 that lead
to an interesting sound then that's what I'd like to hear about. I
also have a handful of other chips that would choose over the 3320 to
build a filter around so I'm trying to determine what stands out about
the 3320? Where does it shine? What kinds of applications is the 3320
a first choice for some people?

The digisound modules seem to be the best choice for a diy effort at
this point but I'm not opposed to doing my own pcb layout or even
veroboarding a design if I like it well enough.
