> You know it is hard to take the vvm guys seriously when they just appeared > in the latest wire. Sure I read it but it is one of the most pretentious > (and without substance) rags out there. And as for jumping on band > wagons, wire is more than guilty. bah... so a high profile magazine sez 'you wanna do some photoshoots for the cover of our mag? we'll even let you stand on a meat sculpture and we'll pay for yer lunch..' and you'll say no?! i doubt it! >Perhaps when the first boc 12" came out they couldn't get hold of a copy... >I know I couldn't and I'm sure a lot of people out there will echo me. err... but jockey slut is located right there in MANCHESTER! it couldn't be that hard to find. >Betcha Lance or Aaron S Gregory could >make a ten times better mag all by themselves. EXACTLY... i know nearly a half dozen people right here on this list who do their own zines. many of them will send ya out a copy for very little $/or even free(!).. hell, aaron's photocopied _the daily skam_ revealed more to me than every jega, boc, and v/vm article and review ever in the wire and jockey slut combined! (why do i want to read boring info that was probably just snipped from months back on this list, when i can find out what video game system brian datathief plays!). i'll spend a good few weeks on a copy of the tiny EXP, as opposed to the twenty minutes i'll spend extracting the 'good stuff' from the raver kid, fashion whore, ad-filled pages of jockey slut or urb, which are huge in comparision (but urb does get props for it's hip hop coverage- the most recent issh has features on blackstar, saul williams, &ozomatli) the whole magazine scene paralells the record industry acurately - there are only two types of mags- those who are in it for the love of it and those who are in it for the money. both jockey slut and such fall in the later catagory, while EXP, obsessive eye, angabase, EAR, immerse and countless web productions such as forcefield, urban sounds, & survellience fall into the former. [The wire somehow fits in the middle safely. I buy about every other issue, it's %90 pretentious rubbish but every now & then i find out about a record i haven't heard or read a nice article.] This doesn't mean that the writings bad or whatever... like a major label good shit does slip out ocassionally, but it's all an issue of ETHICS. The 'major zines' may have better production, exclusive photos, more availability, etc. but they lack HEART. >non-idm note: anybody heard the black eyed peas joint? between the commotion >about the blackstar record (worth it) and the tribe album (totally not worth >it) i haven't heard much about these guys. i really dig the two tracks i've >heard though...opinions? only four words can describe this record:: wack wack wack wack i'm guessing the two tracks you've heard are the lead singles 'fallin up' and 'joints and jams', which are pretty good in a 'look mom my record sounds kinda like the roots' sort of way, but the rest of the album is just awful. I remember there being maybe one other ok song on there but otherwise i can't really see why ANYONE out there would like this. It's too pop for heads, not hard enough for DMX/Canibus/Nore/No Talent kids, and too faux intellegent for the pop crowd. Imagine puff trying to hard come off on a tribe style 'positive tip', but with live insturmentation. 'Joints & Jams' is now an MTV buzz clip (surprise anyone?). Put the $12 that you were gonna spend on this and get the new Medina Green (Mos Def's Crew) & Eminem 12"s that came out this week. btw, this Big Dada release list was on the Dj Shadow list:: >There's a new single by NY Co-Flow associate Mike Ladd coming out 9th Nov. >The Roots Manuva stuff will be out next year (March probably) with a >single 'Juggle Tings Proper' (w/a Co-Flow remix which rocks) and >'Movement' coming out in Feb.There's also a New Flesh 4 Old album >(featuring Juice Aleem) being worked on at the moment. with love, Mlttt-_
