Following this thread about trip-hop: >>>watering down another culture's music to make it >>>more acceptable for >>>a >>>white suburban audience. >> >>You mean like Aphex and Squarepusher did with jungle? >exactly! Firstly, you could hardly say that Aphex and Squarepusher came from a different culture than the musicians/DJ's that made drum'n'bass. After all, Grooverider used to play some of Squarepusher's Spymania stuff. The D&B scene was always 50/50 black/white. Secondly, they hardly made it acceptable for a white suburban audience. If anything, they made it much more unacceptable - I remember seeing Squarepusher at Anokha at the Blue Note and he managed to clear a crowded room in about 5 minutes! Another point, Aphex/Squarepusher got into d&b through listening to Pirate Radio stations in London. These days, most Pirate's in London play Speed Garage (or whatever you want to call it)which for those unaware of the phenomenon is a sort of fast variant of Garage but uses yer Reece/Hoover bassline as taken from d&b and highly syncopated vocals/piano/horns/whatever over the top. Addictive when heard on a loud system. Who will be the first to do an IDM variant of speed garage, coz I think there are definately ideas that can be knicked! _____________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
