'84 from "microphonies" and single. i remember the number of times these
apparently grim-faced dadaists namechecked james brown, motown and
northern soul as being big influences and then produced their own v.
puzzling version of it w/ "voice of america" (" ... there will be no
dancing, ..."). the skewed funk that appeared on "red mecca" and
contemporary singles ("sluggin' fer jesus" and "gut level") gave more of
a clue, but was lovingly buried in industrial noise and distorted tape
samples. its a pity that most of the industrial bands that followed took
the noise end and replaced the funk w/ hamfisted teutonic stomping.
