I don't think, that It would be that expensive. Considering to use the 
Doepfer A-100MNT, which should go for 55 USD. You need a 9V walwart 
transformer, maybe 15 USD. For the housing you don't need a frame. A 
simple Woodcase should be enough. If not a usual desk size hosing should 
cost around 25 USD. All in all you'll have to spend additionally 100USD.

You should not forget to mention: It provides 12 tracks and as far as I 
understand it right the MFB SEQ-01 doesn't differ between write and play 
mode. You're always in write mode and are able to change the pattern. 
This is the TR808 sequencer section we always wanted!
