I've hailed this book on idm before, but you really gotta read: "Altered
State" by Matthew Colin, Serpent's Tail Press U.K. This is the most
cohesive book on the evolution of dance/electronic music culture I've ever
read. Worth a peek.

Ditto on djxn's "Music Madness" recommendation, but I dunno where you can
score this. Look in thrift shop bins, found mine for a quarter there. It's
got a "Megamix" track that's pretty cool, cut-up breakin' sounds. I think
"In Full Effect" (another LP) has a similar cut-up track at the end

I was of the same opinion, but sprung for the 12" when I saw it in a shop
and was pleasantly surprised. Granted, 3 of the mixes are inst. but there
are four distinctly different tracks on here. The first vocal track has
heavy beats w/ old-skool sounding claps and a funk bassline, I think
Menelik rhymes over this one. Second vocal is more downtempo, w/ video
game bleeps and Kool Keith over the top. Also a standout is one of the
inst. tracks which cuts up hip-hop beats over some cracked-out Western
player piano loop. Really surprised me, very much a hip-hop rekkid, so I'd
recommend it. At $6 for a domestic 12"er it's worth your dosh.

Also: thanx to everyone who helped w/ my earlier ambient query, I've got a
list a mile long to start digging into. Especially helpful was a list Jeff
posted me from the ambient list archives, about a dozen or more individual
top ten lists that look incredibly tasty. Can't wait to start listening to
these. I don't think he posted it to the idm list in order to save space,
but if anyone wants a copy mail me privately. It's a pretty good summation
of "definitive ambience". Thanks again.
