okay, somebody asked about the sf ninja show. I went, so I'll offer my 2
cents...

we got to the justice leage at about 11pm, right in the middle of
neotropic's set. now I must admit, I knew nothing about this artist
before that night...but I was hyped to see a 'live' act. the music she
played was quite good, nice intella-drum'n'bass, and I liked the video
footage they were playing above her--looked to me like she took a stroll
with a vid cam one day--there were lots of shots of her face & stuff.
but, I was less than won-over by the rest of her live show. firstoff, and
this is just my personal taste, and I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for it,
I'm not keen on a 'live' artist spinning records and then just playing a
few samples overtop....which is what it seemed like she was doing. I can
do that at home. I mean, if there's some real mixing skillz there, that's
one thing, but she was just playing records, and then shambling over to
the keyboadrd and hitting a few keys. big deal. the last piece she
played was very chill, and it kinda killed the vibe in the hot, sweaty,
overcrowded club.

afterwards, the herbalizer went on, the little guy, spinning some
old-school rap/hiip-hop while scratching over top. I dug his
dj/scratching skillz, esp since there was a mini-cam giving the POV of the
mixer and projected overhead, but too much is too much...after a bit it
all sounded the same. then the bigger, frank-black-looking dude walked
up, started grinning like a 5-year-old, and proceeded to play waaay too
much james brown 70's funk. not even any mixing...just record after
record after record. occasionally the little guy would scratch overtop.
but inbetween that they actually walked to the back of the stage and sat
down. I got a bit tired of the 'ow!' and 'sex-machine!', mr. oaf grinning
the whole time like he was the shit.

finally dj vadim started, and kept the old school hip hop shit going. we
left at that point...it was 1:30 and it didn't seem like choc weasel was
going to go on...we musta missed 'em. that electro sounded like it woulda
been cool.
