I really like this whole IDM lark, and I really like soul and funk from back in the day... Still, I don't think this album was just a let down from high expectations, cos I wasn't expecting anything great from Christian Vogel (I really don't like his sound). Anyway, my overall impression was that Chris's I-spent-a-year-getting-every-sound-just-so production style and Jamie's slavishly faithful funk vocals didn't gel at all. Again, I'll stress I'm not anti any attempts at such a fusion on principle, but I don't think it worked here. Goodbye energy, and without energy, the vocal made little sense. I was unsurprised to get right into them live, though. Over a PA all that hit me was the groove, and all up the whole thing is a lot more raw and out of control sounding.
