To publish MP3s or WAVs or whatever sound format of songs from a group without their permission is asking for trouble, for lotsa reasons. What is likely is that Ae are offended at their music being published in a format they hane *no control over*. If the media on which their songs are published isn't important to them, why, for example, would they release an MD-only album or mail-order vinyl? Putting up reproductions of songs, any songs, or any art work, without permission of the artist(s) involved is to take the control away from the artist(s) and put it in the hands of well-meaning but pop-star-blinded otakus. This is the lesson I learned after a year and half of maintaining a web site devoted to the Designers Republic. I'm not sure whether I should put it back up again -- while the site's design and content was meant partially as an inspired and loving homage to the design group and a typographic and information resource for its fan base, I wonder now whether I should have spent the time finding my own style and timing, developing my creativity. I seriously doubt this is a question of "revenue" to Booth/Brown. Artists, with a higher and finer touch, have other motivations. Consider these motivations when you put up other people's work as your own; at least, before you get upset over them getting "offended" at your xerographic activities.
