Part of the EGRES website I've maintained for the past year or so has been a list of web links to various modular synthesizer makers. It's truly amazing and wonderful to see the list grow and grow. This must be the Golden Age of Modulars - there are so many makes to choose from. There's not many resources for the comparison shopper though. You can't go to the local music store and spend an afternoon comparing a Doepfer to a Serge, or any other make. With one or two exceptions, these operations don't use dealerships. A few years ago I was fortunate in being geographically close to a modular synth owner who was willing to let me try his system for a few hours, so I could have a better idea of what I was getting into. The analogue heaven archives are a good place to do research, looking for people's opinions on different systems. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to intentionally compile reviews of different makes and post them as a web page. These reviews should be hopefully low on bias and drool factor - unfortunately all too common in the magazine equipment reviews. A CD, containing examples of several different makes, would be a very cool thing too. Any other ideas? John P.
