Thanks for the reply.

I appologize for my petulant tone.

The fact is, I am driving the thing very hard and it is not meant for 
that. I should know better than to get upset at facts (but I don't).

Just tried using the Doepfer A-138d effect insert module and that fixes 
it.  Basically, it attenuates the signal going to the pedal and then 
allows you to gain it back to unity after the return.

This works.
