This is not a quirk, it's true MIDI Implementation. This is a Mode message
telling the JX to switch out of OMNI mode. Actually, the JX-3P sends this
same message out when you turn it on (as do many Roland synths) which is
why it works plugging the MIDI Out to In, the JX sends the message to
itself. Early MIDI synths functioned the same way. Many early Roland
products default to OMNI on.

I think the ROM upgrade allows you to select channel 1, 2 or 3.
