I think if David is talking strictly about Eurorack gear that's one 
thing. I've had excellent luck with clones from Yusynth, Analogue 
Metropolis, Modcan, and more.
I agree that Doepfer does not sound exactly like vintage gear.
That said, I have not heard anything that sounds like vintage Roland 
modular--100m, 100 or 700 series. The Modcan can come pretty close to 
the latter.
